Shaffer, E.C. 9-'91" Provenance / Acquisition: Shaffer Studios, Washington, D.C., 15 October 1991. Purchase and Authentication from the highly reputable auction house Heritage Auctions, Design District, Dallas, Texas. 2020 Biography Marry Shaffer was born in 1944 in Walterboro, South Carolina. She grew up in South America. She studied illustration and painting, earning her B.F.A. in Illustration in 1965 from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). She has taught at RISD, Wellesley College, and New York University as the Director of the Crafts Program in the 1970s and 1980s. She also managed the Art Center at the University of Maryland. Mary Shaffer first explored slumped glass in the early 1970s, combining it with found materials. A recurring theme is one in which she marries the glass with discarded metal tools selected from a pile in her studio. Sheets of glass are heated into a plastic state, then allowed to slump, or sag, over sections of the tools or minimal geometric forms. The hot glass is cooled, arresting the fluidity, producing a folded or gracefully draped state more akin to fabric. Shaffer’s work in every medium reveals a fascination with the effects and manipulation of viscosity, leverage, balance, inertia, mass, and space. Shaffer’s work is in collections at the American Craft Museum, New York City, NY; Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY; and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, NY; The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, MI; The Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio; plus prestigious art institutions in France, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, Denmark. During her career Shaffer’s works have been exhibited at numerous galleries and museums. At present, Shaffer divides her time between New York and New Mexico Condition: A superb museum quality example, in excellent original vintage condition. May have minor patina / age appropriate wear. • Lucio Bubacco Signed Devil with Rose Murano Art Glass Sculpture Candlestick
    By Lucio Bubacco
    Located in Forney, TX
A rare and exceptionally executed signed Lucio Bubacco (Italian, b. 1957) hand-blown Venetian art glass 'Red Devil with Rose' Candlestick, dated 1994. The visually striking sculptural candlestick of cobalt glass with gilt foil inclusions, featuring a flameworked figural stem in Bubacco's exquisitely detailed fine quality style, resting on circular foot, inscribed: Bubacco Lucio 94 PROVENANCE / ACQUISITION: Habatat Galleries, Boca Raton, Florida, 1995. Property from the Estate of Myra Janco Daniels, Naples, Florida Acquired from highly reputable auction house, Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas. Design Signature Auction catalog #8110 DIMENSIONS: (approx) 18.25" High, 5" Wide, 4.75" Deep ABOUT THE ARTIST: Most of the subjects of Lucio Bubacco’s (b. 1957) glass art are provocative and polarising; at the same time they are sensual and beguiling. In a kind of erotic ‘trance dance’ – Mephistophelian and frequently riotous – nightmarish fabulous creatures and mythological phantasms virtually undulate about each other. His technical virtuosity in creative execution is unparalleled, for the Murano-born glass artist has elevated the Venetian flame technique to a new level of skill and complexity. Bubacco has captured human feelings and emotions in the masterly play of gestures and muscles of the glass figures featured in his burlesque installations. Full of wit and irony he thus explores the limits of kitsch without overstepping them. Follow him into a world of carnevalesque orgies, crystalline incubi and erotic fantasies in glass! Lucio Bubacco is represented in numerous museums around the world, including the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, The Corning Museum of Glass, Museum of American Glass, Millville, and Tampa Museum of Art (US); Nagoya Museum (JP); Glasmuseum Frauenau and European Museum of Modern Glass / The Veste Coburg Art Collections (DE); MusVerre, Sars-Poteries (FR); Museo del Vetro, Murano, Venice (IT); Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (NL); J&L Lobmeyr Museum and The Margot and Roman Fuchs Collection, both in Vienna (AT). BIOGRAPHY: Lucio Bubacco was born on the beautiful island of Murano, near Venice, in April 1957. Commonly referred to as the Glass Island, Murano provided Lucio with the inspiration and techniques that have set him above and beyond his common contemporaries. He has given life to an art form uniquely his own using the traditional Venetian lampworking...
