About the Item
Gongshi plates
Hand made unique undulating form plates, Objet d'Art in Tenmoku glossy finish.
These sculptural plates are taking inspiration from the Chinese ‘gongshi’
‘Gongshi (Chinese: ??), also known as scholar's rocks, are naturally occurring or shaped rocks that are traditionally appreciated by Chinese scholars. It’s also believed to possess spirits from nature…...’
Clay memory is often considered a troublesome property. Ceramists need to predict and manage memory to prevent warping and cracking.
The artist plays with clay memory to form its unique undulating forms, they allow maximum movements in drying and firing. Using the clay memory as the form shaping process. Allowing the force of nature to take over the final forming stage.
The plates are to bring wonders and remind us of the deep connection with nature which we used to have.
