About the Item
American, 19th century.
An unusual cast iron pilot house eagle circa 1880.
In the 19th and early 20th century it was common to find eagle carvings on American steamboat pilot houses. Each of the eagles were typically unique to the division of boats. Expert carvers used wood, gilt and iron depending on their ability and purpose. Most did not survive as the boats were destroyed for scrap metal. This is very heavy and features old growth to verso.
