Art Deco Bronze French Study of an Albatross by Emile Dautrive, circa 1930

About the Item

A large and impressive art deco bronze study of an albatross on the wing above a crested wave, by Emile Dautrive circa 1930 This most eye catching and stylish large art deco bronze study depicts a large albatross swooping in strong winds above a choppy sea over a crested wave. This very decorative art deco piece of sculpture is very solidly cast in heavy bronze which has a most pleasing cold painted sage green finish which is richly patinated with darker shades. The cold painted finish is in very good condition with only a few minor age related small signs of wear. The figure is made in two separate pieces where the bird can be lifted off the wave where it locates onto a shaped bronze peg which fits into a matching hole. The sculpture is fully signed Dautrive on the reverse of the wave. The renowned French artist, Emile Dautrive, was active from the late 1920s through the 1930s producing iconic art deco sculptures. It is mounted onto a very large and heavy cut and polished black marble plinth which is designed to counterbalance the heavy bronze bird which gives the impression of almost floating in an impossible position. A very clever design and a beautiful sculpture. French circa 1930. Height 40cm x width 67cm x depth 24cm.
