About the Item

Very graceful animal statue depicting a deer by Chris van der Hoef for Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, Gouda. Chris van der Hoef (1875-1933) was a Dutch designer, sculptor, medalist and decorative artist. Van der Hoef worked for several pottery manufacturers during his career. He made his most iconic designs for Plateelfabriek Zuid-Holland. For example the successful 'squares tableware' which was a design dating from 1904 and remained in production well into the 1920s! Another example is the black and white tea set, characterized by conical shapes, and first produced in 1926. This particular tea set can be found in the public collection of Museum Boymans van Beuningen and many other works are part of public collections as well. The final designs Van der Hoef made for Plateelfabriek Zuid-Holland comprises 21 sculptures, mostly animal figures, finished in matte white pottery. This elegant sculpture of a deer is an excellent example. The matte-white skin of the deer (# 15) fits in beautifully with the smooth, delicate design. Moreover, light reflections are circumvented by the matte finishing which reinforces the shapes of this magnificent sculpture. The fact that Van der Hoef has designed numerous medals, translates into a beautiful, nearly two-sided approach to the three-dimensional sculpture; it almost appears to be a relief rather than a spatial form. The animal figure is signed with Chris van der Hoef’s monogram: "CJH" (between the front and hind legs of the deer; on the right side); "HOLLAND" (on the bottom) Literature: L. Jintes, J.
