ABOUT THE SCULPTOR Alexandre Zeitlin (French/American, 1872 - 1946) was an outstanding sculptor known for his portrait busts. Alexander Zeitlin was born in Tiflis, Georgia (Russian Empire), in 1872. He held his first art exhibition in his hometown in his early teens. At first, the novice sculptor studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts (1890–1894), where his portrait busts of Archduke Otto were noted. He then studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Zeitlin's ‘Despair’ statue and a portrait bust of the opera singer Jeanne Hatto were among the first to receive public recognition. He became known for his portrait busts.
