Ethno Design Massim People, Trobiand Islands, Wooden Charm Pig Sculpture

About the Item

Late 19th to early 20th century New Guinea, Trobriand Islands, Milne Bay, Massim People carved wooden pigs with incised decoration and flat paddle-style tails. The National Museum of Australia holds about 24 of these pig carvings from this era, acquired in 1915 and can be viewed online in their digital archive as part of the Papuan Official Collection of the Milne Province, Papua New Guinea. In the Papuan culture, the pig is said to hold a significant position playing a key role in families and villages' economic trade and social structures.
