Exceptional Exotic Carousel Zebra by Karl Muller

About the Item

A late 19th century-early 20th century carousel zebra by eminent creater Karl Muller in carved, painted wood. Ex-coll. Muller/Thummel studio in Molbitz, Germany, thence Fabienne and Francois Marchal collection, Gerardmer, France, inventory no. 54. Exhibited Musee des Arts Forain, Paris. Karl Muller and his business partner, Hermann Thummel (like their competitor Friedrich Heyn) had a workshop in Moblitz, Germany, specializing in carved carousel figures. Muller and Thummel were renowned for their exotic animal repertoire which included ostriches, lions, giraffes, antelopes and zebras. This zebra bears all the attributes of Muller's bold, masculine style, while his partner, Thummel, carved in a more light-hearted manner. It is interesting to conjecture whether each artist carved the animals best suited to his particular style.
