Flemish Alabaster Sculpture Group of Three Lions Playing
About the Item
Alabaster group of three lions playing on a naturalistic base, raised on a gilt-edged plinth.
From England, Spain, and France, to the Low Countries, Germany, and Poland, alabaster was a popular material in European sculpture, in particular between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries. More readily available than marble in most countries north of the Alps and easier to carve, this soft and fragile stone was suitable not only for bespoke monuments and altarpieces, but also for statuettes and reliefs produced for the open market. In the case of our sculpture, the elegance and sheen of the material makes the group even more lively and attractive, while the subtly worn gilt edge of the base on which it is resting (unattached) adds some color and patina.
