About

A charming late 19th century French faience laughing cat circa 1890 produced by the pottery manufacturer 'Mosanic', the bright yellow glazed body with hand decorated painted blue and white hearts and dots, with blue whiskers and eye lashes, an yellow ears with blue inside and green glass eyes, The cat has a handprinted makers makers mark 'Mosanic' to the base. Mosanic produced many different forms of decorative pottery, much in the style of Quimper pottery, including a range of whimsical animals including cats, dogs, frogs and exotic birds, all of which are hand painted and have a very French country look. There is some discussion amongst collectors of Mosanic Cats that they were also known as 'Brothel cats', being used to leave outside the doors of brothels as notice that the establishment was open for business.
