Pair of Large Glazed Terra Cotta Lions or Foo Dogs
About the Item
Extraordinary pair of fine and rare and very large pair of glazed terra cotta decorative foo dog or lion statutes, circa early 20th century. Glazed in green, yellow and red with slight difference indicating they are hand made. Used to guard the entryway to temples and homes of the very rich, they depict the guardian lions of the Far East. Always in pairs to represent classical Feng Shui yin and yang, they were symbols of prosperity and success. Features include incredible detail and expression.
