Refined and exquisite pair of Murano glass birds; the design, full of soft curves and rounded ends, fascinates us with its unparalleled and elegant plasticity and lightness; the birds were made using the "submerged" glass technique, a process used by Murano furnaces in the production of art glass since the late 1930s but which became popular in the 1950s; it consists in pairing, by heat, certain shades of color by immersing the glass, mouth-blown with a special rod by a Master glassmaker, in crucibles containing different colors; at this point the Master was able to make the massive block of glass delicate, almost vaporous, then pulling it by torsion, working it with pliers and shaping it by hand gave it the desired shape; for this the object was made entirely by hand and without the use of molds or models, thus creating a unique piece, just like a work of art. The colors of the birds were obtained by adding small amounts of metal oxides specific to each color to the molten glass; the master glassmaker's exceptional skill was to succeed in the final blowing to delicately blend the various colors, an operation that not everyone in a furnace can do. The pair was made between 1970 and 1975 in Murano in the furnace of Archimede Seguso, whose signature is engraved under each piece. Archimede Seguso was born in Murano on December 17, 1909, and at the age of 11 began working in the glassworks of which his father Antonio was one of ten partners and honed his skills by remaking 18th-century glass. In his early twenties he became an excellent Master Glassmaker, also distinguishing himself with the newly established heavy art glass work. Before long Archimedes begins to express himself with glass and becomes "Master of First Square," who, even then, was the go-to man in the furnace, and develops his innate skill in solid sculpture. He took as draftsmen in the family factory "Seguso Vetri d'Arte" first Vittorio Zecchin and then Flavio Poli. From the 1930s he was invited to exhibit at the Venice Biennale, where, until 1972, he had the "Venice" Pavilion dedicated to Murano glass. Leaving "Seguso Vetri d'Arte," in 1946 Archimede founded the " Vetreria Artistica Archimede Seguso," thus gaining full creative independence; the company became famous for creating glass artworks of high quality and innovative design. Among his main works created in his long activity are animals, for the beauty of which he is nicknamed "the Master of Animals." One of the hallmarks of Archimedes Seguso's art was his ability to experiment and innovate. He developed glassblowing and glassmaking techniques that were at the forefront of the industry, creating extraordinary works of art that often combined traditional craftsmanship skills with modern designs. The glass that came out of his hands became highly sought after by international collectors and is displayed in art museums and galleries around the world, confirming Archimede Seguso as one of the dominant personalities in the glass art of the century, Murano's most famous master glassmaker, "the Master of Masters." The company remained active and prosperous until Archimede Seguso's death in 1999. After his passing, his work was carried on by his descendants and the firm continued to produce glass artwork of the highest quality. The birds are in good condition. Archimede Seguso redefined a 650-year family history of Murano glass-making with brilliance and novel techniques, elevating him to an exemplar for the maestros of his time as well as for future generations of glassmakers. This next generation included his sons and grandsons, who carried on and further expanded the family legacy of Venetian art glass. The survival and revival of traditional glassblowing combined with unique design are the legacies left behind by a master.

Seguso grew up in the family furnaces of the Soffieria Barovier Seguso and Ferro, where his training began at age 11. By the time he turned 20, he was a maestro in his own right, joining the family business as a partner.

In 1933 the company changed its name to Seguso Vetri D’Arte, and Seguso gained sole control. He collaborated with designers Flavio Poli and Vittorio Zecchin, which allowed him to achieve artistic sovereignty leading to the opening in 1946 of his own furnace, Vetreria Seguso Archimede. There, he could explore his design ideas with creative freedom. In 2007, the 23rd generation of Seguso glassmakers took the lead at Seguso Vetri D’Arte. Brothers Gianluca, Pierpaolo and Gianandrea Seguso carry a six-century dynasty of Seguso glass into the 21st Century.

Archimede Seguso’s art glass pays homage to tradition. Seguso studied and mastered techniques from centuries past, but he also pioneered innovative approaches, such as submersion and unconventional color constitutions. He awarded future generations with stunning and unprecedented effects, such as ribbed textures, rings, needle shapes and the appearance of embedded objects.

A lifetime of achievement created by Seguso is honored in museums worldwide, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, MoMA in New York and Museum Kunstpalast in Dusseldorf, to name a few. His exhibit resume spans decades, beginning with XX Biennale, Venezia, in 1936. It includes a 1989 exhibit of “Il Maestro dei Maestri” at Tiffany & Co., New York, and 2013 exhibitions at Musée Maillol in Paris and Museo della Basilica di San Marco in Venice.
