Very Large Bronze Model of a Bengal Tiger, Viennese, Stamped for Franz Bergman
About the Item
This striking monumental bronze tiger was produced in Vienna around the turn of the twentieth century in the popular cold-painted bronze technique. Whereas most examples of this theme are miniatures around 15cm in length, this colossal example at 115cm is well over a meter in length, making it a rare and possibly unique example of one of Franz Bergman's most recognisable and sought-after animal sculptural motifs. Bergman's work can generally be divided between Oriental, erotic, and animalia, with his animal sculptures generally playful and whimsical. This work therefore constitutes a rare departure: a sculpture purely intended to depict the power, presence, and majesty of an adult Royal Bengal tiger.
The tiger piece is stamped for Bergman and 'Geschutzt / Austria / 3353', with the familiar 'B' within a two-handled vase signature.

We firmly attribute the Austrian Bronze to Franz Bergman and date it to the late 19th century circa 1890. Franz Xavier Bergman (1861-1936) was the owner of a Viennese foundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronzes with a range of subjects such as oriental, erotic, and animal figures. He was probably the most famous Austrian bronze foundry who is widely recognised for smaller cold painted bronzes with an extremely good attention to detail. Signed often with a ‘B’ or Bergman and a registration mark. Geschutzt often stamped or printed it is pronounced “guess-shutst.” It is an abbreviation of the term gesetzlich geschutt which is a German phrase that translates as legally protected or in other words copywriter. It bares is a similar meaning to the English word Patented or French Depose...Category
