- French Antique Bronze Sculpture Bas-Relief "Lion of the Zodiac" by Antoine-LouisBy Antoine-Louis BaryeLocated in Shippensburg, PATHE LION OF THE JULY COLUMN: LION OF THE ZODIAC AFTER A MODEL BY ANTOINE-LOUIS BARYE Patinated bronze on walnut plaque Signed "BARYE", cold-tooled verso "43" Item # 107GWK14D This Fine bas-relief sculpture of Lion de la Colonne de Juillet (Lion du Zodiaque) portrays the astrological sign Leo as a prowling and ferocious lion with a mane that engulfs his head and neck, walking a Fine line along a narrow ledge while opening his mouth like one about to emit a growl. He is set against the equatorial band of the sun's path as it makes its way through the various illuminations of the zodiac. Barye was employed by the architect Jean-Louis Duc to model this bronze lion for the western side of the July Column. Erected in the Place de la Bastille in Paris, the monumental structure commemorated the overthrow of the Bourbon monarchy and the 504 lives lost in the insurrection. Influence for the model is perhaps somewhat owed to Visconti's "Walking Lion" held at the Musée Pie-Clémentin, a more romantic anthropomorphic modeling of this powerful beast. Glenn Benge observed that the lion was likely based on the engraving by Pietro Santo...Category

- French Antique Bronze Sculpture of "Harvester" by Mathurin MoreauBy Mathurin MoreauLocated in Shippensburg, PA"HARVESTER" AFTER A MODEL BY MATHURIN MOREAU (FRENCH, 1822-1912) In a reddish-brown and golden patinated bronze; signed in base "Math. Moreau" Item # 012SKP14W A fine model of a rural young farmer resting against a rocky outcrop to sharpen his scythe, the base of which has been set in the hay collected in a pile beside the rock; the naturalistic base is signed along the back in his typical nearly cursive script "Math. Moreau". It is a complex model and a fine accomplishment for the foundry, the joints seamlessly flowing into one another without any obvious connections. The surface is chiseled with great care, resulting in fine detailing of the toes and fingers to include the wrinkles at each joint and texturing of the nails, crisp eyelids and flawless skin, gorgeous texturing of the garment...Category

- Wood Sculpture Depicting John the BaptistLocated in Saint-Ouen, FRThis wood scultpure showing fine traces of polychromy depicts John the Baptist, one the Old Testament’s last prophets and the first martyr of the New Testament. He is easily recognizable with the lamb he is carrying in his left hand. The way the artist has carved the face exudes a spiritual strenght inherited from previous centuries. Description Saint John the Baptist is depicted bare feet, seated in a hieratic manner. His elongated face is marked by a beard and a moustache. The straight nose and wide eyes indicate a Spanish origin. This asumption is reaffirmed by the Saint’s resigned expression. His parted hair frames his face while uncovering his ears. He wears a round collar red-orange tunic, draped onto the body and belted at the waist. A flap of his green coat covers his knees and falls down in stylized pleats. Following iconographic rules Saint John the Baptist is pointing with his right hand the lamb seated...Category
