Superb Ancient Roman Gold Solidus Coin of Emperor Constantius II, 355 AD

About

A superb example of ancient Roman gold coinage, in the finest state of preservation. A gold solidus issued under Emperor Constantius II (Flavius Julius Constantius Augustus), at the Sirmium mint, circa 353-354 AD. The obverse with the Emperor shown in a heroic pose, wearing an ornate cuirass, carrying a round shield and a long spear over his shoulder. The shield is decorated with a soldier on horseback and Constantius wears an elaborate plumed helmet with a pearl diadem around the rim, the tassles of the diadem and the loose locks of the Emperor's hair blowing in the wind. The inscription reading: Fl Ivl Constantivs Perp Avg "Flavius Julius Constantius, Eternal Augustus" The reverse with Roma and Constantinopolis seated in thrones, clutching spears and holding between them a large round shield. The inscription reading: GLORIA REIPVBLICAE "To the Glory of the Republic" VOT XXX MVLT XXXX "30 Years of Vows, to 40 More!" Mint mark of Sirmium in exergue. An outstanding coin, perfectly struck from an obverse die of the finest style, lustrous and sharp. A truly FDC piece, practically as struck. Weight: 4.55 g Diameter: 21.55 mm Provenance: European private collection, purchased from Oslo Myntgalleri, Norway, around ten years ago and previously in a European private collection.
