About the Item

17th century Adoration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Carved, ebonized and gilded wood, 40 x 31 cm The first mention of the Heart of Jesus occurs in the Gospel according to Matthew (11: 28-29): "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, that I am meek and humble of heart and you will find refreshment for your souls". In the Germanic territories a particular veneration of the Heart took strength, which resulted in a subsequent cult, which took place in the Middle Ages. Several monastic orders contributed to the establishment of the cult within national borders; later, thanks to Jean Eudes, specific liturgies relating to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary matured. The ascetic activity described by Saint Margaret Mary in her own spiritual biography established an exemplary narrative tradition on the style of hagiographies: the saint told of having received an apparition of Christ himself who, showing her his heart, asked her to commit to celebrate a feast in his honor the octave of Corpus Domini. Theologically, the heart of Jesus is to be considered as a compendium of the Christian mystery, a further specification of the verb that becomes flesh, in which the most direct concretization of the dogma of the Incarnation can be condensed. In this sculpture, intended to act as a coping of a painting, a kneeler or other furnishing accessories, the lively treatment of the volumes that make up the two cherubs, arranged in a mirror image, gently cheers the features of the composition. The triangular conception of the sculpture helps to raise the focal point vertically, culminating in the Sacred Heart. The subtle decoration, extensively lacquered and gilded, greatly increases its charm.
