Antique Cast Spelter Neoclassical Woman with a Peacock Sculpture on Marble Base

About the Item

This large and substantial antique cast spelter sculpture is unsigned but presumed to have been made in France in circa 1880 in the neoclassical style. This very detailed cast sculpture depicts a robed neoclassical woman, possibly Hera the Greek mythological goddess of marriage, standing next to pedestal with her right arm around a male peacock that is sitting atop the pedestal. In her left hand, she is holding a scroll or tube of some fashion, which may have held something at one point, but its significance is unclear. The casting is very well executed from every side and clearly details the woman's face, folds in her robe, feathers of the peacock and small intricate details on the sides of the pedestal. The sculpture is mounted to a black, most likely marble base and has metal feet. The sculpture is done with a matte black patina with some green accents to give the appearance of bronzing.
