About the Item

18th century Italian angel wing on elestial quartz crystal in matrix with tiny shells coordinating with the remaining distressed paint. This particular type of quartz has natural terminations on the body and faces of the mineral. These are often etched into the crystals, and many have key formations on the face of the crystal, an indented area going into the crystal. The 18th century Italian fragment wing is originally from Florence, Italy, and is part of Interi's rare collection of fragments found in the infamous Florence flood of 1966. The Florence flood was the flooding of the Arno River that left historic churches and buildings completely submerged and their contents damaged. One wealthy Florentine man collected many ecclesiastical gilded antiquities from the surrounding churches and stored them in his storehouse. This storehouse remained completely closed for about thirty years. About 15 years ago, they allowed only a few select dealers in, and within a matter of 5 or 6 years, this man's stock had been entirely depleted, and no one was able to buy any more. Years ago Jean, the creative director and artist behind Interi, began to take interest and buy these fragments out of her own fascination, now having these treasures but unable to purchase or find any more. These fragments have been used for decorators and designers alike to copy for distressed accessories, but here we have them, the originals. While many of our fragment artifacts are distressed due to age, these Florence fragments, in particular, stand apart. They symbolize a history that has been carried through the streets of Italy, to the storehouse, and now to the modern home. The Florentine wing, elestial quartz crystals, and shells are put together in a sculptural form - creating a piece that appears to have evolved together over time. Interpreting the past to create a piece entirely original, evolving in its own right.
