19th Century French Bronze & Gilt Figure "Le Fil de la Vierge" Signed E. Hebert

About the Item

Decorate an office or a study or an office with this elegant antique bronze woman figure. Hand crafted in France circa 1870, and titled "Le Fil de la Vierge" (The thread of the virgin in English), the sculpture stands on an oval gilt bronze base plinth. The neoclassical figure depicts a seated lady gazing at a thread in her fingers; the artwork has wonderful details on her dress, hair and body features. The statue is signed by French artist E. Hebert, with the inscription's cartouche: "Le Fil de la Vierge". The female sculpture is in excellent condition and adorns a beautiful two-tone patinated bronze and gilt finish. Pierre-Eugène-Émile Hébert (1823-1893) was a French sculptor; son of sculptor Pierre Hébert, he studied both with his father and with Jean-Jacques Feuchère (1807-1852). Émile Hébert participated in the Salon de Paris and the Exposition Universelle (1855), created the allegorical statues La Comédie and Le Drame for the vaudeville theater in Paris, and was awarded a Second Class Medal in 1872. Émile Hébert was one of the few sculptors to work with the renowned bronze Fondeur Georges Servant, and their artistic collaboration resulted in pieces of the Neo-Grecian and Egyptian Revival style. Listed in the Benezit (see last picture). 17"H
