20th Century desk accessory "The Musicians"

About the Item

A couple of hand-carved Musicians in wood inserted into a non-coeval base. The subjects represent two dancing children playing the flute. This sculpture piece is of perfect size to be a desk accessory, measuring 11x31x26 cm (4x12x10 inches). This amiable couple of dancing musicians was created in the XXth Century, gaining an antique patina in the recent 50-70 years. We believe they were made as a carving-study, as it features a sketchy-style of the carved wood. Whilst the base is in the typical style of the late 1800s, during which wood putty was used to reproduce a false wood carved effect; the sculpted details are instead gilded in pure gold. During the centuries the flutes have been lost or damaged, therefore are no longer part of this sculpture (for the time being). Apart from this, the colours and the base are both in excellent conditions making it a perfect accessory for either a modern living environment or a more antique-oriented one. This piece has been restored in modern days by Claudia Fontana. Daughter of the Roman Maestro Alfredo Fontana, Claudia learned this antique art of restoration from the hard lessons of her father, in a Bottega in the centre of Rome. The great influence of pieces that have come by the Bottega enriched the cultural and historical knowledge of the Fontana's, who have spent their lives in bringing back to life ancient pieces of furniture. Claudia's philosophy and work ethic make this process a pure form of art: attention to details, historical research and knowledge combined with a grand amount of patience makes it possible for us, nowadays, to touch, feel and envision the aesthetics of a world that used to be. All of her restoring techniques are in fact focused on regenerating pieces to be structurally solid, but maintaining the original aesthetic as much as possible.
