The Abduction of the Sabines Copy of the Sculpture of Jean De Bologna

About the Item

The abduction of the Sabines copy of the famous sculpture of Jean de Bologna from the 19th century, the sculpture is in alabaster and the base in green marble, height 97 cm (base included). Height of the statue 70 cm by a width of about 22 cm. Note that the photo of the base is missing. note that some fingers are broken or have been restored. "the abduction of the Sabines" by Jean de Bologna from the 19th century copy of the famous sculpture of the Italian Renaissance. The Abduction of the Sabines was sculpted from a single block of marble by Giambologna between 1574 and 1582, on the order of Francis I de' Medici. It is located in the Loggia dei Lanzi, piazza della Signoria in Florence, Tuscany. The sculpture measures 4.10 meters in height, placed on a base. The work marks the Abduction of the Sabines by the Romans, on the orders of Romulus. The sculpture is all in tension and curves. The Sabin at the feet of the Roman shows a position of submission and fear, as if he did not really realize what is happening: the horror of the situation surprises him. His hand in front of his face protects him from the jostling that is taking place. The standing Roman clearly dominates the situation. His tense body rises to the sky, he is proud. He carries the Sabine at the same time as he supports the whole sculpture. By his carry, the Roman has just caught the Sabine by surprise. She has suddenly lost her balance and is trying to regain it, she is not yet attached to the Roman. He must nevertheless provide a constant effort to support the Sabine, shown by his slightly bent leg. La Sabine closes the sculpture. His arm is outstretched, symbolizing the end of the statue but also the purpose of the abduction. Her knotted body symbolizes the call for help. The whole is balanced by parallel and perpendicular lines, marking strong contra-posto in the Roman. The fluidity of the curves aerates the sculpture by making it a coherent and dynamic whole.
