Antique Bronze Sculpture By Henri Godet (1863 - 1937), Paris, 1910s

About the Item

Antique bronze sculpture on a marble base by the french sculptor Henri Godet (born in Paris March, 5th 1863 - Vincennes 1937). Depiction of a young shoe shiner boy, "Cireur de chaussures". He wears tattered clothes with holes and is barefoot as a poor boy used to look on the streets of the former Paris. Under his left arm he carries several shoe cleaner brushes and the right arm is stretched into the air. His face shows the expression of shouting, he wants to draw attention to his shoeshine services. A wonderfully accomplished, lifelike depiction of life in Paris around 1900. H. Godet, a sculptor and medallion engraver, he left behind a number of small busts of women, particularly flower-women, some twenty centimeters high, made from a variety of materials and often edited in bronze. Sketches in clay were recently acquired by the Musée d'Orsay. Henri published his works himself. Indeed, a small publicity brochure exists in which he presents the many facets of his sculptor-statuary activities: decorative sculpture, funeral architecture, furniture sculpture, busts, medallions, medallion engraving, stone or marble reproductions of earlier sculptresses, and many more.
