Antique French Faience Tureen Modeled as a Pumpkin 18th Century

About

Antique French faience tureen modeled as a pumpkin on a bed of leaves. We were so excited to find this extraordinary 18th century Strasbourg tureen. Made circa 1770 it is modeled naturalistically and painted in shades of green highlighted with yellow. We see a growing pumpkin before it is ripe and turns orange. The tureen is attached to its stand which has three large green pumpkin leaves. Throughout much of the 1700s, Strasbourg was the center of the faience (tin-glazed earthenware) industry in France. During the 1740s and 1750s, rich enamel colors, an innovation inspired by porcelain painting, became fashionable on European faience, as did ceramic objects shaped like animals, flowers, and vegetables. Dimensions: 12.25" diameter x 10" tall Condition: Some excellent invisible restoration to the body and the cover. Price: $5200.
