Antique Staffordshire Figure Group 'Babes in the Wood'

About

"Babes in the Wood" is an affectionate 18th century Pratt Ware pottery figure group of two young girls in an arbor. They appear to have been picking fruits which are now in their laps, and they are contentedly asleep beneath the green leafy canopy of a tree. An identical example can be found in the City Museum Stoke-on-Trent, England. Also see: P Halfpenny "English Earthenware Figures." History Pratt Ware was first made by the Pratt family in the 1780's in their factory at Lane Delf in what is today's Stoke-on-Trent, England. Because of its popularity Pratt Ware was soon made by many of the other Statffordshire potteries. The distinguishing aspects of this type of pottery are relief molded figures, and the use of the underglaze colors: green, blue, ochre, orange and brown.
