Bing & Grondahl Porcelain "The Tinderbox" Hans C Anderson 8051 Royal Copenhagen

About the Item

The Tinder Box is a small exquisite porcelain figurine that shines like a jewel. The figures are carefully created in great detail with much attention paid to the clothes and their decorations, the crutch, the cat, etc. This porcelain was based on the Hans Christian Anderson tale of “The Tinder Box”. A soldier is returning from the wars one day when he meets a witch. She tells him that she can give him riches, if he will do a favor for her. There is a hole at the top of a nearby tree. If the soldier climbs the tree, the witch tells him, and slides down the inside of the hollow trunk, he will find himself in a great hall in the inside of the tree. Three doors come off the hall, leading through to three chambers containing treasure …… Jens Jakob Nielsen Bregno (1877-1946) was a Danish sculptor and ceramics designer often referred to as J.J. Bregno and who signed his porcelain pieces JNB. He collaborated with Bing & Grondahl, Sax and Dahl Jensen Porcelain and designed silver for Kay Bojesen. He received the Eckersberg Medal in 1919. He was born in Hedensted, near Horsens, the son of shoemaker Mads Nielsen and Elise Laursen, changing his name to Bregno in 1913. He was an apprentice joiner and woodcarver in Aarhus initially and then apprenticed as a stonemason in Stockholm around 1898. He worked as a decorative sculptor in stucco artist Hans Lamberg-Petersen’s workshop in Copenhagen from 1902 - 1905 and then continued his studies in Italy, France and Germany until 1908. From 1907 - 1911, Bregno created a number of ceramic works that were fired in Patrick Nordstrom’s workshop in Isley. He later created numerous statuettes for Bing & Grondahl in collaboration with the company’s artistic director Hans Tenner. He later worked for Dahl-Jensen and Nathalie Krebs’ Saxbo. Bregno created unique works in his own name that were fired at different workshops, including Saxbo in Herley and Hjorth in Ronne on Bornholm. He also designed stoneware for Saxbo and silver for Kay Bojesen. His studio was located at Haraldsgade 18 in the Norrebro district of Copenhagen. He was a member of Knustforeningen. The Knustforeningen was an Art Society formed by a group of Art-lovers in Copenhagen who decided to form this society at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Their goal was to support the art and the artists of the time. Until 1898, the Bing & Grondahl brand simply consisted of B&G stamped in blue. Bing & Grondahl then chose the three towers as its factory brand. The three towers are from the coat of arms of Copenhagen, showing the three towers of the castle of Absalon. The three towers have always been stamped in green. However, they continued to stamp with B&G in blue up to and including 1947. The factory mark symbolizes Bing & Grondahl's connection to Copenhagen and the three towers have become synonymous with Bing & Grondahl in the same way that the three waves have become synonymous with Royal Copenhagen.
