Brutalist Wall Cross - Blue & Khaki - Modernist Studio Pottery, Hand Made Europe
About the Item
This exceptional wall cross, crafted by a modernist Studio Pottery artist, hails from Europe. It is a powerful Brutalist design with hues of blue and khaki.
The cross exhibits volumes borrowed from the robust Art Brut movement, allowing the Christ figure to embody a sense of powerful freedom in shape and movement. The hand-painted lunar light blue Christ figure takes on a supernatural presence within its human form. Its textured surface, marked by controlled crazing fragmentations, unveils partial transparencies that reveal its terracotta base, creating a convincing flesh-like color when combined.
The crackling texture covering the body of Christ serves as a reminder of the fragility of mortal existence and the gravity of his thoughts. The face of Christ, reminiscent of Jean Cocteau's drawings, embodies an exemplary form of modernism, simplifying volumes to their essential core that find meaning in their geometric collision.
The khaki moss-like textured cross takes on an abstracted branch shape, akin to a pagan cross, providing a serene setting for the Christ figure.
This piece bears the stamp of the Pottery Studio and is meticulously hand-painted, originating from Europe.
Our European cross collection (Tradition & Modernism) is composed of one-of-a-kind, handcrafted pieces made by Studio Pottery artists from the 1950s to 1970s. They show a range of diverse styles, from modernism to brutalism. Each artist has taken a unique approach to depict faith through the language of art and the medium of ceramics. This large collection offers an opportunity to curate a custom wall of modernist crucifixes, and appeals to those who appreciate the symbolism and beauty of religious artifacts.
