Carl Milles, Rare Plaster Sculpture of Europa and the Bull
Carl Milles, Rare Plaster Sculpture of Europa and the Bull, circa 1925 Kneeling astride the vigorous bull, Europa is poised in flight, her cloak blowing in the wind, raised on a rectangular contoured base with foliate frieze. Europa and the Bull depicts the abduction of Europa, the daughter of the Phoenician king Agenor, by Zeus, who has taken the form of a white bull. In the Metamophoses, the Latin poet Ovid describes the bull's gentleness: "His forehead offered no threat, there was nothing fearsome about his gaze. A peaceful expression lit his face." Carl Milles (1875-1955), a Swedish sculptor best known for his fountains, dominated the Swedish art world for the first half of the 20th century. In 1931 he went to Cranbrook in Michigan to serve as sculptor-in-residence for the next 20 years. His works are included in many international museum collections. Bronze casts of "Europa and the Bull" are featured in the Tate Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Denver Art Museum, among others. His summer home, Millesgarden near Stockholm, is now a museum of his works.
