Christ, Polychromed and Giltwood, Castillian School, Spain, 16th Century

About

Sculpture in carved wood, gilded and polychrome representing Christ Crucified, with three nails (following a usual iconography since the Gothic) and short purity cloth knotted to one hip, face and head slightly tilted and turned and eyes closed and the halfopen mouth (Jesus deceased), marked anatomy and a slight "contrapposto". Wood was the most worked material in Spanish Renaissance sculpture, usually with a polychrome finish and with gold and stew. In general, one can speak of an introduction of Renaissance forms thanks to Italian works or Italian authors residing in Spain during the first third of the sixteenth century, maintaining a taste for the Gothic. There is talk of a first generation of artists and Renaissance Spaniards (although still on horseback having something of the Gothic) in the second third, the Castilian school being one of the most outstanding, with names such as Vasco de la Zarza, Alonso Berruguete, Juan de Juni, etc .; next to them, we must not forget the French and Flemish influence (Felipe Vigarny, etc.); At the end of the 16th century, the importance of the Sevillian school of sculpture, around the commerce of the Puerto de las Indias, stands out. Renaissance sculpture of the sixteenth century is developed in Spain at different times and with different levels and influences depending on the regions or teachers. Size: 33 x 5 x 38 cms. Total Height 40 cms.
