David Segel (American 1921-2005) Biography: American painter and sculptor, David Segel studied at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, Lynchburg College in Virginia, The Institute of Design in Chicago, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Segel then moved to Paris to work and teach, and began what would be a prolific career. He has been shown in galleries from Paris, France, to Los Angeles, California, including the Whitney Museum in New York City. Segal also exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Segel worked with a variety of mediums including, oils, bronze and wood sculptures, and dramatic sketches. Segal’s work is represented in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum. His awards include the First Carnegie Prize and the Hallmark International Art Award. His solo exhibition of painting and sculpture include: Lynchburg, VA; Galerie Ariel, Paris; Galerie Maight, Paris; Van-Dieman Lilienfeld Gallery, New York; Palmer House Galleries, Chicago (multiple exhibitions); 333 Gallery, Chicago; Darbe Gallery, Santa Monica, CA; Sculpture Gardens, Venice, CA; Creative Arts/Center, Burbank, CA; Santa Monica Public Library; White Meadows Gallery, West Hills, CA. Segal also participated in many group exhibitions, including: the Whitney Museum, NY; Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, PA (awarded First Carnegie Prize); Galerie Jeanne Bucher, Paris; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; Hallmark International Art Award (awarded prize); Butler Art Institute, Youngstown, OH; Springfield Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, MA; Art Institute of Chicago; Brand Art Galleries, Glendale, CA; Golden State Sculptors Assoc., Agoura, CA (1st prize-figurative realism, ’94); GSSA Joslyn Fine Arts Gallery, Torrance, CA (3rd prize, ’97); Watercolor West, City of Brea Gallery, CA (Juror’s Award, ’92); Tubac Center of Arts, Tubac, AZ; Ocean House Senior Exhibit, Conejo Valley Artwalk, Thousand Oaks, CA (2nd Prize-sculpture, ’94); Los Angeles Art Association, CA; American West Coast Censorship Competition, Sacramento, CA; Triton Museum of Art, Santa Clara, CA; Long Beach Arts, Long Beach, CA. David Segel died in Venice, California, in 2005 at the age of 84.
