About the Item
Handmade custom skyline of lower Manhattan composed of blown and hot sculpted glass objects. Grouping consists of 50 various pieces to compose the skyline as shown, along with a portrait of the Brooklyn waterfront to serve as a backdrop. Installation sits atop a custom template of the footprint of lower Manhattan.

Statement:
For the past 40 years I’ve had this fascination with Downtown Manhattan. Growing up watching my father commute to the financial district provided me my first glimpses of the city I would once live in. I’ve seen the neighbourhood burgeon and fall and now that I’m fortunate enough to have my own family there, we’re witnessing it rise again with striking examples of modern architecture blending into the timeless grid that is Manhattan. Downtown is my way of commemorating this as we all slowly witness the metamorphosis of New York’s Classic skyline.

FurthurDesign is a line of modern glass objects and lighting handmade by William Couig in Brooklyn, NY. The work has an aesthetic steeped in the 70's vision of future that William was raised on in film and popular culture. Created using traditional Venetian techniques, the FurthurDesign line utilizes the natural attributes and tendencies of glass to create logical design concepts. While each grouping has machine-made qualities, they have distinctly hand blown features and an organic appeal.
