English Victorian Parian Ware Figure
About the Item
The figure sat upon a hollowed oval pedestal base with a beautifully detailed scene of cupid sat upon a lion, the figural group named The Power of Love to the front centre dates to the late Victorian period circa 1900. Unsigned.
Parian Ware is a type of biscuit porcelain imitating marble. It was developed around 1845 by the Staffordshire pottery manufacturer Mintons. It was named after Paros, the Greek island renowned for its fine-textured, white Parian marble which has been used since the antique for sculpture. Parian was designed to imitate carved marble however it bared the great advantage that it could be prepared in a liquid form and cast in a mould which enabled mass production. Mintons, Copeland, Coalport and Wedgewood amongst others all participated with the manufacture of Parian Ware with a large quantity signed.
Victorian an era of the United Kingdom and its overseas Empire which spanned through the 63-year reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).
