The ballet the piece takes inspiration from Flore et Zephyr premiered in London at the King's Theatre in July of 1796. The show tells the story of Zephyr, the fickle west wind, and his wife Flora, a nymph of flowers and springtime.
The statue depicts Zephyr floating while he carries Flora on his hip in a dark brown patina. He gazes at his wife while she holds a cluster of flowers above their heads. A garland of flowers rests on her abdomen while the exquisitely modeled drapery of her dress cascades down the composition, acting as the anchor for the two floating figures to the base.
