Fine Quality Signed Bronze Of Silenus With Dionysus

About the Item

A mid-19th Century French Bronze finely crafted and signed, of Silenus with the child Dionysus (Bacchus). Silenus is shown cradling the infant tenderly, stood against a highly detailed forest bough covered in vines and draped with the skin of a wildcat representing his mythical stature. A celebrated subject matter in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which was popular in France and Italy. First recorded in 1569, Napoleon purchased the original marble sculpture in 1807. A wonderfully hand cast bronze with intricate detail to both Silenus and Dionysus faces and form with further attention paid to the leafy bough on which they stand. This piece would add a sense of grandeur to any room.
