French Gilt bronze sculpture of a gallant in Renaissance style - 19th France
About the Item
Gilded bronze sculpture representing a gallant young man in Renaissance costume, in the style of the French King Henry IV. He is dressed in a doublet for the top, and over that he wears a casaque-style coat, worn wide open, which has short puffed sleeves to reveal the sleeves of the doublet. It has sleeves slit in the middle to let the arms through. For the bottom, the man wears tights with breeches. He wears a hat with a feather.
There is an Italian influence in clothing: During the Renaissance, costume was largely influenced by Italian fashion which gave it elegance, luxury and refinement of fabrics.
The bronze work for clothing is precise and fine.
The young man is standing on a pedestal and gives the impression of posing for the sculptor. Perhaps he held a sword in his right hand.
The base on which the gallant stands is a marble slab fixed on the bronze.
The bronze of the base is magnificently worked with decoration of foliage and plants.
This sculpture is very decorative and elegant.
