Jorgen Mogenson Midcentury Cubist Figurative Sculpture for Royal Copenhagen

About the Item

A midcentury Danish modern abstract cubist figurative sculpture by artist and ceramicist Jorgen Mogenson for Royal Copenhagen. In addition to being a sculptor, Mr. Mogensen was also a cartoonist. From the Lambiek website, "Jørgen Mogensen was a Danish comic artist and sculptor. He made his first cartoons for Hudibras, the paper of cartoonist Cosper in 1944. Under the joint signature MOCO, the authors also created the pantomime comic strip 'Alfredo', syndicated by P.I.B. around the world, starting with Le Figaro in France." And to share a bit of history on his ceramics work, I offer this snippet from the C20 Ceramics website, "Mogensen trained at the Art Craftsman School in Copenhagen, and then studied for a period in Paris. He started his professional career as a potters apprentice with Royal Copenhagen in 1949. He worked with iconic figures such as Knud Khyn, Axel Salto, Gerd Bogelund and Nils Thorsson in their “stoneware cellar” where this group worked at Royal Copenhagen. His first work for Royal Copenhagen were his 1950s pieces of stylised bird motifs with a mottled brownish stoneware glaze – a similar glaze to which the other stoneware artists were using during this period. He rarely used other glazes or colours – but you can sometimes find a design in blues." This sculpture by Mogensen is so unique and wonderful and in blues. Blue is my favorite color, thought you should know. Yes, there is a hairline crack that may have happened in the firing process as the hairline appears to be under the glaze. And speaking of glaze, there is a skip. And yes, this is a whimsical and magical figure. Cubist, abstract and figurative all at once. Evoking a smile from every viewer, this exquisite piece of art history is ready for your interior.
