Life Size Anatomical Study of Flayed Male L'ecorche after Jean-Antoine Houdon USA, 20th century, Variant of 'Anatomical Man No. 3' This work we are offering is a variant, without the outstretched arm. This work is a hollow composition casting, with a plaster and polychromed patina finish. this work weighs about 40-50 pounds. Great in person presence. History There are numerous versions of Anatomical Study of Flayed Male L'ecorche by Houdon, also know as Anatomy Study of Man by Houdon. In 18th century Rome, Houdon studied the human anatomy with surgeons. In 1767, he modeled the famous L'ecorche, an anatomical study of a flayed male which allowed the muscles to be observed in detail. The original écorché figure was used for centuries in art academies and ateliers around the world to teach students anatomy and cast drawing. Our Offering: Jean-Antoine Houdon's original version of 'Anatomical Man No. 3' is a figure standing in contrapposto The version we are offering is variant of 'Anatomical Man No. 3' without the full arm extended Provenance: Estate of a Princeton University Professor.
