Magnificent Italian Bas-Relief "Athena of Piraeus" Carrara Marble, 20th Century

About the Item

Magnificent Italian Bas-relief "Athena of Piraeus" Carrara marble 20th century Measures: height: 110cm width: 70 Weight: 70kg Very good condition The Athena of Piraeus is a bronze statue dated 4th century BC. It currently resides in the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus. The Piraeus Athena was discovered in 1959 by workers laying pipes. The Athena of Piraeus was found with three other large bronze statues, along with other artifacts. The Piraeus Athena was discovered in excellent condition; however, it suffered irreparable damage after being abandoned on the damp floor of the Piraeus Museum according to the scholar, Steinhauer. There are various theories about the origins of the statue. Many scholars believe that the statue had been stored in the port warehouse and was in the process of being shipped. Also, the Piraeus Athena and the other statues were not in random order, but appeared to be packed. A coin found near the statues was dated 87/86 BC, along with an image of King Mithridates VI. As Piraeus is known to have been captured by Sulla in 86 BC, many have speculated on two further theories. One theory is that the statues were about to be shipped in order to save them from the Roman attack. The second theory is that the statues were shipped by the Romans to Italy as part of their booty. It is thought that the statue may originally have come from the sanctuary of Zeus Soter in Piraeus. This is because the peplos of the statue is similar to the drapery of the peplos of the statue of Eirene Cefisodotus the Elder, who was also known for making a statue of Athena. Other scholars believe that the statue may have come from Delos, since three of the statues found with the Athena of Piraeus were of Artemis, and Delos has been considered the birthplace of Artemis. Furthermore, the Romans had captured Delos in 88 BC and therefore the statues could have been a part of General Mithridates' booty. Due to the dating, it has been estimated that the Athena of Piraeus probably dates from 360-340 BC.
