Madonna and Child and St. John
Marble, cm h. 43 - Base, cm 16 x 8
The sculpture under consideration, depicting a Madonna and Child with St. John at her feet, represents a marble artifact referable to the 18th-century Genoese school, which developed in the wake of the great Baroque sculptors of 17th-century Genoa, such as Pierre Puget (Marseille 1620 -1694) and Filippo Parodi (Genoa, 1630 - Genoa, July 22, 1702). The evident assimilation of Pugetian and Parodian models suggests a date for the work to the very early 18th century, when the theme of the sacred, emptied of pathetic accents for a lighter, more subdued tone, acquires a progressive stylization of forms and distinctive physiognomic features, such as the sharpening of the eyes.
Interestingly, the baby Jesus, held in the arms of the Virgin, appears here as an ordinary, slightly chubby and cultured child as he seeks the attention of his mother, who instead stares into the distance ahead, as if foreshadowing his dramatic fate. At the foot of the robe, with an equally playful attitude, is little Saint John.
It is possible to detect a similar treatment of the theme-here reinterpreted-in Pierre Puget's Madonna Carrega now housed in the Museum of St. Augustine in Genoa and in the two-faced Statue with Madonna and Child and St. Anthony and Child by an unknown Genoese sculptor of the second half of the 17th century housed in the same museum. A further cross-reference is to be found in Filippo Parodi's production: the treatment of the child and the pose of his Madonna del Carmine from the Church of Saints Victor and Charles in Genoa cannot but have been spitfire for the present plastifier.

- 19th Century Madonna and Child with Souls in Purgatory Papier-Mache SculptureLocated in Milan, ITFirst half of the 19th century Madonna and Child with souls in Purgatory Lacquered and gilded papier-mache with polychrome wooden base cm 96.5 x 37.5 x 28 "At that time I asked the Lord Jesus: 'For whom do I still have to pray?'. Jesus answered me that the following night he would make me known for whom I had to pray. I saw the Custodian Angel, who ordered me to follow him. At a moment I found myself in a foggy place, invaded by fire and, in it, a huge crowd of suffering souls. These souls pray with great fervour, but without effectiveness for themselves: only we can help them. The flames that burned them, they did not touch me. My Guardian Angel did not abandon me for a moment. And I asked those souls what their greatest torment was. And they unanimously answered me that their greatest torment is the ardent desire of God. I read the Madonna who visited the souls of Purgatory. The souls call Mary 'Star of the Sea'. She brings them refreshment ". (Diary of Sister Faustina Kowalska p. 11) A Polish religious, Saint Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938) reinterpreted in the pages of her testimony the ancient role of the Virgin as savior and supporter of the souls of Purgatory. The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council established that, assumed into Heaven, the Mother of God should operate a continuous intercession in favor of those children waiting for Paradise who were in the place, quoted for the first time by Pope Gregory the Great...Category
