About the Item

The long and uncovered hair and the container that holds it up are the iconographic attributes that allow linking the carving with Mary Magdalene, mentioned in the New Testament (and in a series of Apocryphal Gospels). The vessel would allude to the passage in which he anoints the feet of Christ with perfumes and wipes them with his hair; the hair would make reference to her condition of "ancient sinner". The importance that theology gave it, logically, is transferred to the artistic field with a large number of representations, following different iconographies ("santa", "penitente", "Nolli me Tangere", etc.). Stylistically, note the contrapposto of the figure and the intention, already somewhat clear, of partially showing or enhancing the anatomy of the figure, still maintaining a Gothic elegance perhaps, and continuing with the abundance of golds that was customary in medieval art. In the Spanish Renaissance, the use of gold in sculpture and certain small details in some schools are maintained with variations; likewise, there is generally a certain confrontation between classical sculptors (Italianate) and those of Flemish affiliation (with more dramatic approaches and greater emotion), highlighting, whatever the case, the attention to the emotional (greater than in the rest of Europe ).
