Art deco sculpture in spelter by Max le verrier with green patina on a black veined marble base, Gloire model by le Faguays, signed on the marble. Length: base 16cm Depth: 10cm Height: 61cm Weight: 7Kg Louis Octave Maxime Le Verrier was born to a jeweler father. His interest in the arts, and especially in drawing and sculpture, came early in his life. His father wanted his son to work in agriculture: he sent him to an agricultural school, against Le Verrier's wishes. He quickly gave up and his father emancipated him. In 1909, Max Le Verrier left for England and became interested in aviation. He passed his military exam and was sent to the front in 1915. As a pilot and non-commissioned officer, he began painting and sculpting in earnest, and met artists such as Bardin. He entered the School of Fine Arts in Geneva. After the armistice, Le Verrier returned to Paris, opened a studio and made his first axe sculpture, "Pelican", in the style of the 1925s. It is signed "Artus", pseudonym of the artist. In 1919, it is the creation of his publishing house, following a great success. He ensures himself the casting, the chasing, the patina, and the sale of the works. Seven years later, he opens his own company. The success is present, the company grows, workers are hired. Through his sculptures, Le Verrier translates the fashions of the time, including the liberalization of women, with his famous "Clarity", from 1928, which represents the woman in the "garçonne" (short hair,...). His source of inspiration comes from the woman mainly, by realizing dancers, gymnasts. In parallel to this theme, he approaches that of animals. Other dancers and men, Le Verrier realizes chandeliers, feet of lamps, bookends ... During the Second World War, the artist was a member of the Resistance and therefore temporarily closed the workshop. After the liberation, he took over the business, and oriented it towards the creation of bronze objects: ashtrays, religious articles, medals... This French sculptor received a gold medal at the first International Exhibition of Decorative Arts. His style is synonymous with eclectic, with a mixture of elegance and modernism. Under several influences (ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, tribal art...), he is interested in new technologies and its different forms. Pierre le Faguays was born in 1892 in Nante sParis, France. Pierre le Faguays was a French sculptor of supple female figures, monuments, ceramics and figurative lamps working in the Art Deco style, Pierre Le Faguays came to public attention with his early exhibitions of exuberant dance figures, inspired by the statues of Tanagra, a community north of Athens is known for its mass-produced terracotta figurines. It is believed that he also used the pseudonym of Raymond Guerbe and Fayrel, which is reinforced by the similarities in subject matter and style. Faguays was originally from Nantes, France. He studied at the Paris Salon and in Geneva, Switzerland, and was a member of the Salon, La Stèle and Evolution groups. His mediums included ivory, wood, stone and bronze. In 1927, he was awarded the French Medal of Honor. He was a leading sculptor and his work is often praised for its high quality and attention to anatomical precision. He also created works for Goldscheider in Paris under the label "La Stele". He has worked in many mediums including ivory, bronze, regula, stone, wood, alabaster and ceramic. He studied with his friend Max Le Verrier. He was a good friend of both Marcel Bouraine and Max Le Verrier and the Le Verrier foundry produced many Le Faguays statues. All three had studied together at the Beaux Arts in Geneva and remained lifelong friends. There is also a discrepancy as to his date of death, given as 1925, 1935 and 1962. A Papillon Gallery biography states that Le Faguays "exhibited in 1937 in Paris at the International Exhibition". Assuming this participation is true, this would make the 1962 death date the likely date. Pierre le Faguays probably died on September 8, 1962, in Paris.
