A Meiji period bronze of a seated man smoking, shown with his pipe in his right hand resting on a rootwood base, wearing workman’s clothing with bare feet, the face expressively carved, signed in a seal 暁光作 Gyoko saku [Made by Gyoko]. Japanese, circa 1880. Artist: 赤祖父暁光 Akasofu Gyoko, a member of the Tokyo Chukinkai 東京鋳金会 (Tokyo Cast Metalworkers’ Association), active in the second half of the Meiji Period.
