Michael Alfano Yin Yang "Being and Non-Being.." Figural Sculpture

About the Item

“Being and non-being create each other. Difficult and easy support each other.” The Tao by Michael Alfano. Yin Yang is a Chinese philosophical concept that describes opposite but interconnected forces. In Chinese cosmology, the universe creates itself out of a primary chaos of material energy, organized into the cycles of yin and yang and formed into objects and lives. Yin is the receptive and yang the active principle, seen in all forms of change and difference such as the annual cycle (winter and summer), the landscape (north-facing shade and south-facing brightness), sex (female and male), the formation of both men and women as characters, and sociopolitical history (disorder and order). Sculpture in Bronze Resin over ebony base colors. Michael Alfano has been sculpting figures, public art, and philosophical pieces for over twenty years. He first studied at the Art Students League of New York with an emphasis on life-size sculpture and anatomy. His formal education continued at Boston University and was augmented by internships with several prominent sculptors. He occasionally teaches sculpture at workshops.
