Mid-Century Modern Gilded Earthenware "Turnabout Cat" by Hedi Schoop

About the Item

Hedwig “Hedi” Schoop “Turnabout Cat” in glazed and gold-leafed earthenware (ca. 1950s, California, USA). After fleeing Nazi Germany for the USA in 1930s alongside her husband composer, Freidrich Hollander, Schoop became one of the most acclaimed and imitated California ceramicists of the 1940s-1950. This Egyptian-inspired ceramic cat is a fine example of the unique quality of Schoop's pieces. Aptly named "Turnabout" the cat’s expression and facial features differ from each side, one representing female, the other male. Thick earthenware was glazed in matte black then gold-leafed (a rare finish for these cats which were available in an assortment of colors and at least two different sizes). This is the larger of the two sizes that were available - H: 11" x L: 8" x D: 3.25" Very good, vintage condition with scuffs to the gilt, as shown (wear consistent with age and materials). Incised signature present "Hedi Schoop California Turnabout Cat."
