Monumental Murano Glass Chessboard 32 Sculptural Pieces Gold Leaf Unique
About the Item
Special huge chessboard. The board is about 50 inches square (125 cm square).
Set is complete. Two colors, green and cobalt blue. Pieces are completely handmade in Murano.
Tallest piece, the king is 13 inches (33 cm) high.
Original Italian chess set where the bishop is a Standard Bearer or an Archer.
Pieces theme is a 17th century, where the king is on the style of Roi Soleil (Louis XIV). Upper part is in hand sculptured massiccio and lower is on a rigadin ritorto technique.
Please see the details of the knight witnessing a high quality maker. The ability to reproduce so many pieces also makes it being made by a top maestro. This leads to Zanetti or Seguso, Barbaro, really hard to assign.

The board is a 50 x 50 /124.5 x 126.5 mirror that has been etched on the white squares. Owner said it was made to be illuminated from below.
It's a huge composition made by 32 glass figurines. Introvabile.
The use of colors and technique gives a broad idea of being from the second part of the 20th century. I like to believe it was made in the early 70s when chess became popular due to the most famous chess match, Fisher Spasskij that was followed by the entire world.

The filigree/filigrana glass is a cane with a color inside. Usually clear on the outside with a core in colored or opaque glass. Most used are white or black filigrana. This is a self-made filigrana as there is a green coating over an Amethyst core, making the Amethyst almost a dark bronze color. The other cane is clear with amethyst. The twisting (mena in muranese, or ritorto) makes a lay with the back of the vase almost as it is a reticello (once called filigrana, so that explains the term mezza filigrana). The special color combination was then rolled over pure gold leaf, highlighted with the iridescence smoke and then covered with another layer of high temperature glass to make the gold vivid.
