In 1930-1931, he participated in the creation of the large bas-relief for the facade of the Musée des Colonies, for the colonial exhibition of 1931. Returning to Paris, he continued his work. His "Giant Suffocating a Snake" from the Salon of 1934 earned him a gold medal, and he received the grand prize of the International Exhibition of 1937 for the creation of the sculpture of the bronze door of the City's museum of modern art from Paris. He received the title of knight in 1939, then Officer of the Legion of Honor of Arts and Letters in 1949 for his works. He served as a jury at the École des Beaux-Arts between 1939 and 1942. Early 16th century bust of Saint Barbara, School of Troyes, Champagne
Located in PARIS, FR
Bust of Saint Barbara School of Troyes, Champagne Circa 1520-1530 Partially polychrome limestone h. 13 in., w. 12.6 in., d. 9.84 in. This remarkable stone sculpture belongs to the traditional Champagne repertoire from the first third of the 16th century. Saint Barbara is one of the most venerated saints in Champagne during the Renaissance. The very small corpus of saints sculpted in the region during the Renaissance only includes Saints Marguerite or Savine, or anonymous saints, and is mainly dominated by numerous Saints Beards. In the guise of a sweet and kind young girl, the Saint has an oval face with a high domed forehead, almond-shaped eyes with modestly lowered eyelids. The long, wavy middle-parted locks of hair flow down either side of her shoulders. A beaded crown sits atop her slightly inclined head. She is dressed in a dress with a square neckline and an open coat covering the shoulders. The tower, symbol of suffering, which serves as an attribute of the young martyr, is in the form of a dovecote tower in cut stone with a conical roof covered with flat tiles, pierced by a dormer window and equipped with a large arched door . As an essential attribute, the integrity of the tower displaying the door at its base indicates that our sculpture, although executed as a bust, could in no way constitute a fragment of a larger statue. The work of a talented anonymous sculptor from the Troyes region, our Saint Barbara with a delicate face and meditative expression reveals all her inner grace and arouses emotion and offer a feeling of benevolence. The essential effects that the artists sought to transmit through their artistic creations, but above all spiritual. Saint Barbara There is no certain historical data on Barbara who probably died a martyr at the beginning of the 4th century. However, its story is located in Turkey during the persecutions of Maximilian. The figure of the saint became legendary following the compilation of the acts of her life in the 7th century and the subsequent publication of “The Golden Legend...

Monumental Stone Capital Decorated with Coat of Arms, France, 15th Century
Located in Bruxelles, BE
Monumental stone capital carved in high relief with foliage and a central coat of arms. France, 15th century 34 x 49 x 47 cm Provenance : Georges Demotte collection, then André Macé, see the photo taken by Demotte in his workshop around 1930. The foliage that surrounds the central ecu with the details of the stems, ribs and lobes shows a naturalistic attention characteristic of 15th century ornamental carving. This large capital with vegetable decoration was made during the 15th century in France, probably for a castle as it suggests the presence of the central shield, originally painted and gilded. The work reveals the exceptional virtuosity of Gothic sculptors who tried giving the illusion of the flexibility of stems and leaves. The kale, which here surrounds the central shield, is a plant characteristic of the exuberance of the flora of the Flamboyant Gothic. This beautiful capital comes from the collection of Georges Joseph Demotte (1877-1923) famous art dealer of Belgian origin specialized in Medieval...

"Poésie" a 19th Century French Polychromed Symbolist Marble Sculpture
By Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
"Poésie" a 19th century French Polychromed Symbolist marble sculpture A Carrare, Sienna and very rare Skyros Marbles Symbolist Sculpture Group. Figuring Poetry under the appearance of Dante and Béatrice resting on a rock, Dante holding in his hand a parchment titled "Poetry". It rests on a Neo-Renaissance moulded and hand-carved walnut rotating sellette, the barrel consists of three fluted Corinthian columns, decorated with foliage at the base, resting on a truncated column decorated with female masks connected by a drape. It’s joined, in the upper part, by arcatures with a background of foliated foliage and masks of women crowned alternately with cutout RT monogram. Moulded triangular base, with curved sides and rising from lobed angles with a frieze of oves at the base. Circa 1870 Measures: Sculpture: H. 75 CM • 29 1/2 IN. Sellette: H. 112 CM W. 44 CM - D. 49 CM H 44 1/8 IN. W 17 3/8 IN. D 19 1/4 IN. The poetry of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) Beatrice Portinari, simply known as Beatrice or Beatrix, commonly refers to the muse of Dante Alighieri, whom he glorifies and loves. But she is also a woman whom, if one follows the New Life, Dante loved from his childhood, and to whom he dedicated a place in all his works. More sensitive than all is the resolute amplification which, after the pathetic force and expressionist intensity of Hell, intensifies with the more elegiac and penetrating emotion of Purgatory and leads to the miraculous triumph of the imaginary in Paradise. Of the three «hymns», it is Hell which is the most known, the most popular one can say: the taste of the picturesque, spread by the romantic criticism, is much to it. Dante, however, had the conviction, repeatedly affirmed in his poem, that by rising from one kingdom to another, he raised his poetry each time by a level which made it worthy of an ever more «high» matter. At a distance of six and a half centuries, there is certainly no obligation to share this view, however assured it may be for the poet. Anyone, however, who wants to enter the world of the Comedy must refuse the scale, eliminatory in its consequences of fact, which puts such a section above the other or brings the Comedy to a rosary of episodes more or less «beautiful» Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti (12 May 1828 – 9 April 1882), generally known as Dante Gabriel Rossetti...
