About the Item
Pair of large Sitzendorf porcelain figural groups on horseback
German, 20th Century
Height 38cm, width 35cm, depth 22cm
This pair of porcelain figural groups are notable for their fine quality and charming subject. Both sculptures depict a horse-riding figure: one a male rider; the other a female rider who sits side-saddle. The male rider is accompanied by a female figure below, who holds a flower basket, whilst next to the female rider a male attendant reaches down to pick up his horn.
In both sculptures, the figures are rendered with expert skill, with their sweet faces delicately painted. The horses have also been deftly moulded, with a degree of anatomical accuracy that is highly impressive. Of particular note are the vibrant colours: the traditional garments of the figures are rendered in a vivid palette. The clothing is also highly detailed, with the floral-patterned skirts of the female figures catching the viewer’s eye.
The figures stand on top of floral-encrusted bases, from which an impressively realistic tree stump emerges. Engraved gilt decoration adorns the outer rim of the base.
Blue Sitzendorf marks can be seen on the reverse of each of the groups. The Sitzendorf Porcelain manufactory traces back to the late 19th century, renowned for its expert quality porcelain models like these two from the Mayfair Gallery collection.
With their equestrian theme a highly desirable subject, these figural groups would make a wonderful addition to any antique collection.
