"Panther Hunter" Danish Sculpture Neoclassical Statue Jens Adolph Jerichau 1846

About the Item

"The Panther Hunter", a sculpture by Danish artist Jens Adolph Jerichau (1816-1883). The Panther Hunter gave Danish artist Jens Adolph Jerichau his international breakthrough, bringing in several prestigious commissions from Denmark and abroad. In Denmark he was appointed professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and also served as its director for extended periods of time. Jerichau’s international outlook eventually set him on a collision course with the trend-setting Danish art circles who did not share his open mind to international art trends. This cast demonstrates Jerichau's interest was not in classical calm and quiet he was more interested in depicting motion and specific moments in time with scenes packed with action and extrovert emotions. The Hunter holds a panther cub under one arm and a brass spear pointed at the adult panther, the sculpture with an incised signature to the base & stands on a separate stepped plinth. The statue is accompanied with a 19th century framed museum photograph of Jerichau's first rendition. Condition is very good, no damage or repair.

  • Chiparus 'The Hunter' Large Art Deco Sculpture with Panther, 1930
    By Demetre Chiparus
    Located in Oakland, CA
Large Art Deco sculpture of hunter and panther (or lion) by the famous sculptor Demetre H. Chiparus. The Art metal sculpture has a beautiful green verdigris patina and stands on an angled green/white/black multi-color marble base. Excellent condition and inscribed on the base “D.H.Chiparus”! Original bronze spear and patina. Very large in size and would look incredible in your entryway, living room, mantle or buffet, or just about anywhere you have 36 inches wide. Chiparus of course the master sculptor, arguably the most important artist for statues of the Art Deco period. He always had a way of rendering both men and women in a most natural and desirable way. A very important piece, pictured in many books on Art Deco...
