Patinated Bronze model of a huntsman and a stag by Holme Cardwell

About the Item

Patinated Bronze model of a huntsman and a stag, possibly Hercules and the Ceryneian stag by Holme Cardwell. Depicting a Classical figure wearing a flowing cloak and holding a stag by the antler with his right hand while blowing a trumpet with his left, the naturalistic base signed and dated H. CARDWELL / FEC.T. ROME 1859. Holme Cardwell was born in Manchester, before moving to London and attending the Royal Academy School in 1834. He was admitted to the Royal Academy following graduation and exhibited several portrait busts between 1837 and 1840. Cardwell eventually moved to Rome, where he lived off and on for the rest of his life, studying and continuing to produce busts and sculptures in the neoclassical style. Superb definition and patination to the bronze.
