Rare Grand Tour Large Sized 19th Century Green Marble Statue of the Dying Gaul

About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely original Grand Tour large sized solid green marble statue of the Dying Goul circa late 19th century A very decorative and good sized piece, there are a lot of smaller examples of this piece around, this fellow is a good large size and would sit beautifully on a fireplace This is a late 19th century finely carved Grand Tour Italian serpentine figure of 'The Dying Gaul' on an oval base, it is after the antique “The Dying Gaul” or “Dying Gladiator” as depicted in his final moments next to his shield and sword, his face in pain with a fatal wound to his torso. The original marble figure which is found in the Capitoline Museum in Rome is a Roman copy of a Greek sculpture thought to have been in bronze. This is a good example of serpentine carving from The Grand Tour. The verde Prato serpentine has been quarried for centuries near to Prato, northwest of Florence in Italy and the stone is so named due to the resemblance to the skin of a serpent. The condition is very good, there are period chips and cracks to the base consistent with genuine age and use, if it was perfect it wouldn’t be Grand Tour!
