Rare Large Staffordshire Pottery Otter Hunter Spill Vase

About the Item

Staffordshire spill vase with a hunting theme which features an otter hunter, his dogs and an otter impaled on his spear. Multi-coloured with underglaze blue version. Dull gilt base line and embellishment. Book reference,'Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding, page 76, figure 1913.

  • Condition:
    Repaired: Stabilised and retouched hairline to left side of hunter's left boot (still slightly visible). Filled and retouched chip to reverse rim of spill. Retouched flake to horn. Retouched paint losses to boots, ground and spill vase. Good. Small flakes to reverse, hunter's buttons, standing dog's left ear and right hind leg. A few paint losses to hunter's sash. Rubbing to gilt. KILN EFFECTS: shrinkage crack to behind dog's neck; shrinkage cracks to underside.
